CM226 - Introduction to Advertising
This course is designed to foster a critical understanding of advertising as an institution and its role in American culture and society. Students develop a framework in which to: understand the continuing dialogue between supporters and critics; and, confront issues related to the institution's ethical conduct, regulatory issues, and social responsibility. The course serves as an introduction to the field of advertising. In this course students will learn how to connect the institution of advertising to its social, political, economic, and cultural impact on society. Students will be able to critically assess the role of advertising. And, students will develop an awareness of ongoing legal and ethical issues that confront the advertising industry.

What a successful student should be able to do
1. Critically assess advertisements utilizing techniques that build awareness of race, gender, class and ethnicity.
2. Identify the major multi-national conglomerate advertising holding companies that own much of the advertising and public relations firms in the world.
3. Develop an awareness of self and sensitivity to “otherness” in advertising.
4. Become competent at utilizing social software for collaborative learning.
